Artist Statement
I am part of a large, loud and happy family. Most of our gatherings are centered around good wine, great food and lively conversation. My love for art unites with my love for family each time I decorate or serve from unique dishware. And, while the language of art may be fiercely individual, that of the family meal is universal. I love the way the two merge as a collect and create funtional pottery that finds its way to the family table.
I began collecting as a young housewife and mother. Years later I studied ceramics and set up a studio of my own, with the help of my generous husband. While I enjoy making a variety of pieces, wine glasses captivate me. I love the intriguing visual communication they exude, and, when form and color are right, the fantasy that is created when sipping from the vessel. When used lovingly, rather than merely displayed, they transcend the familiar visual artwork.
I attempt to create well balanced pieces from the clay, both to the eye and hand. Creating the curve of form and space pleases me. And I enjoy finishing the pieces with mysterious and ethereal glazes.
I find the spinning wheel peaceful and the birth of functional artwork from lifeless lumps of clay a blessing. Every kiln opening is an event, as is every meal or glass of wine shared with family and friends; whether mine, or that of a stranger who has found my artwork a part of their perfect fantasy, their home.
